Rural Estates, FL : Lee County man killed in Golden Gate Estates crash at the intersection of Everglades Boulevard North and 56th Avenue on Tuesday, 16th July 2019

A North Fort Myers man was killed in a Golden Gate Estates crash at the intersection of Everglades Boulevard North and 56th Avenue Tuesday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Anthony Mankus, 77, was driving his 2011 Chevy Impala west on 56th Avenue and was stopped for the stop sign at the intersection with Everglades Boulevard North before the crash, troopers said.

Mankus attempted to turn his 2011 Chevy Impala onto 56th Avenue to travel west at 4:48 p.m. when he entered the path of a semi-trailer truck, troopers said. Heriberto Sosa, 49, of Lehigh Acres, was driving the 1997 Peterbilt 379 north on Everglades Boulevard North and was approaching the intersection of 56th Avenue, according to FHP.

Sosa was not required to stop at the intersection as only 56th Avenue, trooper said.

The front of the semi-trailer truck struck Mankus' vehicle.

Mankus was transported to NCH North Naples Hospital, but died from injuries suffered in the crash, troopers said.

Sosa was not injured and the crash remains under investigation, troopers said.
