Police in Fort Wayne say a driver has died after a crash that happened while he was trying to flee from officers.

The crash happened Wednesday evening on the Airport Expressway on the city's south side and closed some lanes for hours.

The chase started at a shopping plaza when officers spotted the man wanted on several arrest warrants. Police say the man drove off in a van and that two of its tires were later flattened by stop sticks placed on the roadway.

Police say the van continued driving until it suddenly crossed into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a construction vehicle. Emergency crews had to free the man from the wreckage and he died at a hospital. The other driver wasn't hurt.
