Rumford, ME : 72-year-old William Carignan dead after his car hit a utility pole on River Street in downtown Rumford on Friday, March 6, 2015

A Rumford man was killed in a one-car accident on River Street on Friday.

Rumford Police said William Carignan, 72, of Rumford was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer north on River Street when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole. Officers said it happened right down the road from the police department.

Carignan was rushed to Rumford Hospital, where police said he was pronounced dead.

Officers said he died of severe head trauma, and that Carignan was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
