Covington, VA : One man killed, 1 injured after a car crash in Alleghany County on Sunday night, December 27, 2015

Virginia State Police are investigating a Sunday night car crash in Alleghany County that left one man dead and another injured.

A 1999 Ford Explorer, driven by William Austin Childress of Covington, was headed north on Virginia 18 shortly after 11 p.m. when it crossed the center line and crashed into a tree on the left side of the road, according to state police.

Matthew Ryan Long, 21, of Eagle Rock was killed in the crash, according to police.

Childress, 22, was injured. He was listed in fair condition Monday evening at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt, police said.
