Rindge, N.H : No one injured when truck crashes into fireworks store in Rindge on Route 202 Friday morning, November 14, 2014
A pickup truck crashed into a fireworks store in Rindge on Friday morning, but no one was injured.
The owner of Atlas Fireworks said everyone was lucky that the truck hit within 2 feet of either side of the door -- the one part of the building where he's not allowed to store fireworks.
Owner Steve Pelkey said while the Class C fireworks would be unlikely to ignite from an impact, if they came into contact with a hot engine block or hot fluid, it might have been a different story.
According to dispatch reports, the driver of the pickup truck lost control about 7:20 a.m. on Route 202. Employees of the business said the driver wasn't injured and was able to get himself out of the truck.
Police said black ice was to blame for the crash. Employees said ice will often form at the crest of the road. Pelkey said he has long thought the speed limit should be lower on that stretch of road, and he is considering putting protective measures in place.
"As a general precaution, we are even looking into maybe putting in a guardrail just because of the high speeds and the uniqueness of the two businesses on either side of Route 202," he said.
The Food Mart business across the street lost its sign when another vehicle spun out a few minutes earlier. The owner of that store said he spoke to the driver, who was not injured.
There were several accidents Friday morning as light snow fell across much of the state during the morning commute.
