Monmouth, IL : 81-year-old woman dead, three injured in crash at Lake and Knoxville in Peoria on Tuesday, July 19, 2016

An 81-year-old woman died and three people were injured Tuesday after a horrific car crash at Lake and Knoxville avenues.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said the woman has been pronounced dead in the emergency room of OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Her husband, who was also in the car, was undergoing treatment at Saint Francis as well.

Wreckage littered the intersection after the crash. One of the cars involved had its front end completely smashed in. The other vehicle's cabin was largely hidden due to the air bags which had deployed in the crash.

In all, four people were taken to the hospital after the collision which involved a Chevrolet Equinox and a Nissan Maxima about 12:20 p.m. Police say it appeared the collision occurred as the Equinox was making a left turn onto Lake from northbound Knoxville. The Nissan was headed south when the two collided.

The Nissan then caromed off into a nearby gas station parking lot and struck another truck. The two people in the Equinox were also taken to the hospital.

Police weren't clear if the SUV turned in front of the Nissan or which vehicle had the right of way.
Ingersoll said she was waiting to notify the relatives before releasing any more information.
