MARION OAKS, FL : Leesburg girl, Lady Lake man killed in Marion Oaks crash on Thursday, August 31, 2017
Two people, one of them a teenage girl, were killed in a three-vehicle crash on County Road 484 in Marion Oaks Thursday night.
Three other people injured in the wreck were taken to separate hospitals for treatment.
The crash closed the busy highway for several hours as Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigated the scene, tow truck drivers removed the mangled vehicles and Medical Examiner’s Office officials took the bodies away.
The girl killed in the crash was Taquoia Schroeder, 13, of Leesburg, troopers said. She was a passenger in a 2012 Chevy Sonic.
John Ballard, 28, of Lady Lake, was also killed, according to FHP. He was driving a 2000 Nissan Frontier.
FHP officials said the pickup truck was traveling west in the eastbound lane of CR 484. The Sonic — driven by Kalisha Jones, 39, of Leesburg — was traveling east on CR 484, and swerved to the right to avoid hitting the pickup truck.
The Chevy and pickup truck collided, sending the Chevy onto the south shoulder of the road. Taquoia was thrown from the car, officials said. She was not wearing a seat belt.
After the collision, the pickup continued west and was hit by another on-coming car, a 2013 Nissan Altima. The pickup then overturned and finally stopped in the south shoulder.
