North Lauderdale, FL : Irish tourist killed in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 441 in North Lauderdale on Saturday, February 7, 2015

A 35-year-old man accused of taking off after fatally striking an Irish tourist in North Lauderdale was arrested Saturday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened at 4:55 a.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of State Road 7 in North Lauderdale.

Deputies said the 41-year-old victim and two friends who were visiting from Ireland were walking south on a sidewalk next to U.S. 441 in North Lauderdale on their way back from a bar to their hotel.

For unknown reasons, the victim began walking across the road and he was hit by 35-year-old Richard Jennings. Deputies said Jennings, who was driving his girlfriend's black BMW, fled.

North Lauderdale Fire Rescue took the 41-year-old victim to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, deputies said.

An acquaintance of Jennings who saw the damaged vehicle called BSO. Detectives arrested Jennings at his Hollywood home shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, deputies said.

Detectives said they were working to identify and notify the victim's next of kin in Ireland of his death.
