Lake County, IL : Multi vehicle crash congests I-80/94 in Lake County on Thursday, 18th October 2018
Two motorists were injured Thursday in a multi-vehicle accident which gridlocked I-80/94 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.
According to police, at 2:15 p.m. trucker Cynthia Tofflemire, 60, of Ontario, Canada, was eastbound on I-80/94 when, near Indianapolis Blvd., an unknown object struck her tractor, causing her to veer left and collide with two passenger vehicles, a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu and a 2010 Ford Escape.
Tofflemire’s semi then hit the center concrete median barrier before striking two different mile marker signs, one of which in turn hit a 2016 Ford Explorer traveling in the westbound lanes, police said.
The semi came to rest against the median wall, partially blocking the left lane, while the Malibu and Escape came to rest blocking the center and right lanes, police said. The westbound Explorer came to a stop on the inside shoulder of the westbound lanes.
The Malibu’s driver was transported to Munster Community Hospital and the Escape’s to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, police said, neither of them with life-threatening injuries. The remaining drivers refused medical treatment at the scene.
Lanes of I-80/94 remained closed for approximately two hours, police said.
