DALLAS TWP, PA : Two people died in a one-car accident on Kunkle Road in Dallas Twp on Saturday, July 1, 2017
Two people died in a one-car accident on Kunkle Road in Dallas Twp. late Saturday afternoon, according to township police Chief Robert Jolley.
One male and one female died in the accident, Jolley said. Authorities had not yet identified the victims or released any information about them as of late Saturday night.
The accident happened at about 5:20 p.m. when a yellow two-door Chevrolet Cavalier lost control and crashed into a pine tree in the yard of 630 Kunkle Road, according to Jolley.
The car appeared to be almost destroyed as crews worked to remove the bodies early Saturday evening. A Luzerne County deputy coroner pronounced the victims dead at the scene.
The roadway was wet at the time of the crash after a soaking rain earlier, though the rain had stopped by then, Jolley said.
It appears the car was coming from the direction of Harveys Lake, traveling toward state Route 309, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it spun or skidded off the road into the tree, Jolley said.
About 90 minutes after the accident, investigators were still taking photos of the wreckage and debris scattered near the crash site.
A group of people sat on the porch of a home yards away from the tree into which the car crashed. They said they heard the impact of the car slamming into the tree but did not see the accident happen. They declined to comment further.
The crash site appears to be slightly more than 1 mile west of state Route 309 and slightly less than 2 miles east of Harveys Lake.
Police, fire and ambulance crews from throughout the Back Mountain responded, as did state police.
