Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on Lake Shore Drive in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
A 24-year-old man was driving south at 12:19 p.m. in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive when he unsuccessfully tried to brake before crashing into the rear of another vehicle that was stopped, according to Chicago Police and Chicago Fire Media Affairs.
The driver of the vehicle that was struck, a 46-year-old man, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with neck and back injuries, police said. A 14-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man who were riding with him were also taken to Northwestern, while a 12-year-old girl who was in the vehicle was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital. All the vehicle’s backseat passengers also suffered neck and back injuries.
Fire Media initially reported that two people were taken to Lurie and two others were taken to Northwestern. All four were listed in serious to critical condition.
The 24-year-old driver who crashed into their vehicle was issued traffic citations for failing to reduce speed, driving too fast for conditions and following too closely, police said.
