MADISON, WI : 5-vehicle crash sends multiple people to hospital on Saturday, 22nd October 2016

One person was pinned in a five-vehicle accident on Interstate 90 in Dane County Saturday morning, officials said.The Madison Fire Department said crews responded to a report of a crash involving two semitrucks on eastbound I-90 near mile marker 143.

The Wisconsin State Patrol said six people were injured in the wreck.

The driver of a 2016 Kia Forte LX, a 39-year-old woman from Eau Claire, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Her passenger, a 40-year-old Eau Claire man, suffered life-threatening injures. He was wearing a seat belt, state patrol said.

A 30-year-old Janesville man driving a 2003 Ford Focus suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.

The driver of a 2016 Kia Optima EX, a 60-year-old Eau Claire man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. His passengers, a 60-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl, also from Eau Claire, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were all wearing seat belts.

Neither of the semi drivers, a 33-year-old man from Addison, Illinois, and a 62-year-old Waupun man, were injured, officials said. Both were wearing seat belts.

The report said alcohol was not a factor in the wreck.

According to a news release, a semi unit headed south on I-39/90 near struck several vehicles that were slowed in traffic due to bridge construction. The semi then crossed the median and struck the trailer of a double-bottom semi unit headed north, causing a trailer of the double-bottom to separate and overturn in the right lane of North I-39/90.

State patrol said the semi unit crossed all lanes of northbound lanes and came to rest in the right ditch. South I-39/90 was closed for 3 hours.

One automobile sustained heavy damage, and one occupant was pinned in the vehicle, the fire department said. The occupant was extricated and taken to an area hospital with unknown injuries. The drivers of the two other cars and two passengers were taken to area hospitals with unknown injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
