Kenosha County, WI : Suspected drunk driver kills passenger in Kenosha County on Sunday June 8, 2014
A suspected drunk driver rolled his vehicle multiple times early Sunday, killing his passenger and snapping off a nearby utility pole, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department.
Highway 45, just north of Highway 50, has been closed since the crash occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. The highway was expected to reopen soon, authorities said about 11 a.m. Sunday. We Energies will be working on Sunday to replace the utility pole.
Deputies determined the vehicle was traveling south on Highway 45 when the driver lost control in a curve, slid sideways into a ditch and hit a culvert, which caused the vehicle to roll, according to a news release.
The vehicle hit a fire hydrant and utility pole. Two men inside the vehicle were heading home from the Stumble Inn Tavern located at Highway 45 and Highway 142, authorities said.
One occupant died, while the driver was treated at Aurora Hospital and placed under arrest on suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. He also received other traffic-related citations, as speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, officials said.
The sheriff's department has withheld the identities of the men, pending notification of family members, and expects to release their names on Monday.
