Ketchum, ID : A woman was killed and four other people were transported with injuries after an accident on Sunday, July 23, 2017
A woman was killed and four other people were transported with injuries after an accident Sunday afternoon on state Highway 75 near Galena Summit involving three motorcycles and one truck towing a camper.
According to a news release from the Idaho State Police, Kimberly R. Hayes, 26, of Boise, was headed northbound on Highway 75 roughly 0.5 miles south of Galena Summit on a 2009 Honda Shadow motorcycle around 2:30 p.m. when she failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the road’s centerline and sideswiped an oncoming 1988 Fleetwood Taurus camper trailer towed by a 2001 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Jevon L. Benson, 41, and Chentelle L. Benson, 35, both of Twin Falls. At that point, a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Michael A. Jones, 57, of Nampa, with Dana A. Simmons, 54, of Meridian, as a passenger, struck Hayes and both motorcycles crashed, the release stated.
Jason Clark, 46, and passenger Julie S.K. Clark, 45, then crashed on a 1999 Harley Davidson while attempting to avoid Hayes, Jones and Simmons, the release stated.
Hayes died at the scene of the accident, ISP reported, and Simmons and the Clarks were transported via air ambulance helicopter to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise. Jones was transported by ground to Saint Luke’s Wood River hospital in Ketchum before being flown to St. Alphonsus, ISP reported.
According to Idaho State Police, all of the motorcyclists except Simmons were wearing helmets, and the Bensons were wearing seatbelts.
Highway 75 at points north and south of Galena Summit, north of Ketchum, was completely closed for two hours and then partially closed for three hours, delaying travel for many motorists.
Sources said that the riders were not part of a motorcycle group that was escorting buses of children to a site north of Ketchum for the annual Camp Rainbow Gold summer camp for youths with cancer.
