Santa Fe, TX : Bus driver, student critical after collision with Santa Fe school bus on Wednesday, December 17, 2014
A 58-year-old Santa Fe man was in critical condition Wednesday after his SUV struck a school bus from the rear as it was picking up kids on the way to school, authorities said.
Edward Butler was taken by medical helicopter to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston at about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Department of Public Safety Trooper Kenneth Hull said.
The driver of the school bus was taken by ambulance to Clear Lake Regional Medical Center and one student was taken by ambulance to Mainland Medical Center — both just to be checked for minor injuries, Hull said.
Fifteen junior high and high school students were on the bus, which was stopped on state Highway 6 near Park Road and Halloway Road when it was hit, Assistant Superintendent Patti Hanssard said.
“All of the children were evaluated by EMS and either released to their parents or transported to their campuses,” Hanssard said.
Butler’s Nissan Xterra was traveling southeast on Highway 6, Hull said.
“A student was walking up to the bus,” Hull said. “The bus lights and stop sign were activated.”
It’s unclear what caused Butler’s SUV to strike the bus, but officials believe a medical condition may have been a contributing factor. Troopers are investigating, and no citations have been issued, Hull said.
Traffic was backed up for more than an hour in both directions as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
