Fort lauderdale ,FL : Michael Cushing injured and taken to local Hospital after T-bone crash along US 27 on Sunday evening ,April 26 2015
- A South Florida man is clinging to life in a local hospital after, police said, a woman was traveling at a high-rate of speed T-boned the man's car Sunday evening.
The crash occurred near the Sawgrass Recreation Park, north of Weston, along U.S. 27, at around 6:30 p.m.
According to coworkers, Michael Cushing, a father of a newborn child and airboat captain at the Sawgrass Recreation park, had just finished his shift when the vehicle slammed into his pickup truck, ejecting him into the road. He was transported to Broward Health Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. "I can't believe he survived, but that's Michael," said Cushing's wife, Laura Cushing. "That's how he is. He's a tough cookie, and if anyone could survive it, it would be him."
Cushing's truck was flattened, rolling several times before coming to a rest. "From what the emergency people were saying, most people would have died with the injuries that he has," said Laura.
Surveillance footage from the park caught Cushing leaving the property before getting onto the southbound lanes of the U.S. 27. Seconds later, off camera, he was struck. "The police kinda unofficially told us that she was estimated around 130 miles an hour," said Cushing's colleague Tim Schwartzman.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman driving the vehicle that struck Cushing is suspected to have been driving under the influence. Since no charges have been filed, her information has not been released.
Cushing's coworkers said the stretch of U.S. 27 where he was struck is known for drag-racing and speeding.
Despite having been hit, Laura said her husband feels the urge to apologize to her. "He just keeps apologizing like he did something wrong, and you try to tell him, 'You didn't do anything wrong. This is just something bad that happened to someone good,'" she said.
Cushing remains in the hospital in serious condition and is expected to undergo surgery Monday.
