St. Marys, GA : Florida man dies in fiery crash in Camden County early Thursday, June 16, 2016
A motorist believed to be a Cape Canaveral resident was killed early Thursday in a fiery crash on Interstate 95 in northern Camden County.
The still unidentified driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was following a Freightliner tractor-trailer rig south on I-95 near the Dover Bluff exit when the Tahoe struck the rear of the trailer just after 1 a.m., Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Rodney Rozier wrote in his report.
The Tahoe began spinning and Alex Obi-Ugbo, 37, of Upper Marlboro, Md., steered his 2016 Honda Civic right to avoid a collision, Rozier wrote.
The Tahoe nonetheless struck the Civic in the door and, when the Tahoe came to rest, it caught fire and burned with the driver still inside, Rozier said.
He was dead at the scene and efforts were underway Thursday morning to notify relatives in Florida in an attempt to identify him, Rozier wrote.
The driver of the Freightliner, 58-year-old Theron McDaniel of Jacksonville, and Obi-Ugbo were both wearing safety belts and escaped injury, Rozier wrote.
