Logansport, IN : Man injured after a one-vehicle crash on U.S. 35 near Royal Center on Thursday afternoon, May 26, 2016

A Logansport man was airlifted from the scene of a one-vehicle crash near Royal Center Thursday afternoon.

Carlos Hernandez, 49, Logansport, was driving a 2016 silver Saturn SUV southbound on U.S. 35 when he lost control and left the roadway, said Cass County Sheriff's Deputy David Wells. He was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital in South Bend around 3:30 p.m.

The extent of his injuries were unknown. Tire tracks show the SUV nearly hit a sign before eventually hitting the tree. All of the vehicle's airbags deployed, and Hernandez did not have any passengers. According to a witness, Hernandez was wearing his seatbelt.

The SUV was off the road for several feet prior to impact with the tree, Wells said, adding that Hernandez told emergency responders he couldn't remember anything prior to the crash.

Hector Deleon, of Logansport, said he witnessed the crash's aftermath and that Hernandez was conscious but in shock. When Deleon approached the vehicle, he said the driver was still inside and wearing his seatbelt.

Deleon called 911 but officials were already notified and on their way.

The crash closed a section of U.S. 35 for about 20 to 30 minutes while the medical helicopter was on the ground.

Responders from the Royal Center Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Cass County Sheriff's Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Prompt Ambulance Central and Parkview Health assisted at the scene.
