The mother of a 9-year-old girl ejected from a vehicle in a crash Monday now faces charges.
Michelle Barrino, 35, of Shelby, is charged with reckless driving and two counts of child restraint violation.
Barrino was driving down East Zion Church Road when she allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. Troopers say she woke up when her car went into a ditch. She over corrected and her Chevrolet Suburban rolled multiple times, ejecting her daughter from the vehicle, according to N.C. Highway Patrol.
The girl was taken to Carolinas Medical Center Main in Charlotte. She is still there in stable condition.
Barrino had two other children in the vehicle, including an infant. Both were treated at the scene and released.
The infant was in a car seat, and the other child was allegedly not restrained, according to investigators.
Barrino could face up to 60 days in jail and $1,000 in fines if she is convicted of reckless driving.
