Tonganoxie, KS : Bennett, 21, killed in fiery crash on U.S. Highway 24-40 bridge near Tonganoxie on Thursday morning, February 19, 2015

The community is mourning the death of a young man in a fiery crash overnight.

Hundreds of people showed up to honor the life of Colin Bennett, of Tonganoxie, who was found dead inside a burning pickup truck in Leavenworth County.

Hugs and tears were shared by those who gathered under the U.S. Highway 24/40 overpass Thursday night. Police haven't released the victim's name, but friends and family say he is Bennett, 21.

"I went to school with his dad, a good friend,” said Marvin Adcox, a family friend. "I felt really bad for the family and his dad and his mom.”

The truck was found engulfed in flames just before 1 a.m. under the U.S. Highway 24 bridge on Tonganoxie Drive.

Police believe the truck was swerving across the road after losing control at high speeds in the southbound lane before slamming into concrete highway pillars.

Friends and family started the healing process as they left behind a memorial in Bennett's memory. The Kansas State Highway Patrol and Tonganoxie Police Department are still searching for a second vehicle that they say was involved or witnessed the accident and left before emergency crews got on scene.

They do not have a description and need the public's help tracking down the driver.

One of the items left at the vigil is a hat from Bennett's former employer. Out of respect for the family, the employer didn't go on camera, but he said Bennett was the guy everyone wanted to work with.

Bennett's family asked for privacy Thursday night, but added that he was a great kid and will be missed by many.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the crash call Tonganoxie police.
