Madison County, IL : One man died in crash with two tractor-trailers on I-70; one tractor-trailer left scene on early Wednesday morning July 30th 2014
A man died in an early morning crash involving a car and two tractor-trailers Wednesday on westbound Interstate 70 in Madison County.
Jacob L. Dey, 20, of Brighton, was killed in the crash at about 1:50 a.m. Wednesday near Marine, according to the Illinois State Police. Traffic was rerouted onto Route 4 overnight. The interstate was reopened about seven hours later.
Trooper Calvin Dye of the Illinois State Police said the victim was apparently driving home after finishing an overnight shift. Dey apparently lost control of a 2002 Chevrolet near milepost 18. His car swerved onto the right shoulder and then he overcorrected into the left lane.
The Chevrolet was struck by a tractor-trailer that left the scene, authorities said.
The Chevrolet came to a stop sideways in the road and was hit by another tractor-trailer heading west. Both vehicles ended up in a ditch.
A coroner pronounced Dey dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the truck, 54, was not injured.
Authorities are seeking the tractor-trailer that first hit the Chevrolet and said it likely has front-end damage. Dye said that trucker didn't cause the crash but it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident.
