Harrisville, PA : 12-year-old boy killed in all-terrain vehicle crash in Mercer Township on Sunday, December 13, 2015

State police say a 12-year-old boy killed in an all-terrain vehicle crash was riding alone without a helmet or other safety equipment.

Lucas Leone was riding through a cornfield about 4 p.m. Sunday when he crashed in Mercer Township, about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. Police say the boy was making a turn when he drifted into the brush line, hit a tree stump and wrecked.

State police spokesman Trooper Dan Kesten says parents should warn their children about the dangers of riding alone without the proper gear.

The boy's father found the boy when he didn't return from riding. He was taken to Grove City Medical Center where he died.

The boy was a sixth-grader at Slippery Rock Middle School. The district says he was a "well-liked" and "charismatic."
