Tucson, AZ : One man killed and two people injured after SUV slammed into a Sun Tran bus near South Harrison Road on Friday night, February 20, 2015
One man was killed and two people were injured when a Sun Tran bus was rear-ended by a SUV on East 22nd Street near South Harrison Road Friday night, police said.
The driver of the vehicle that crashed into the bus was taken to University of Arizona Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and died at the hospital, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
The bus driver and a passenger on the bus also were transported to a hospital with minor injuries, Dugan said.
The crash occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m.
The vehicles were traveling east on 22nd Street, and the bus stopped at a bus stop west of South Brown Avenue when the SUV rear-ended the bus, Dugan said.
He said the driver of the SUV was a man in his 60s. He was not wearing a seatbelt, said Dugan, adding that speed was not a factor in the crash.
The man's name was withheld, pending notification of relatives, Dugan said.
Eastbound lanes at 22nd Street at South Oak Park Drive to South Brown Avenue were blocked off, Dugan said. The area is near South Harrison Road.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area.
