Lynchburg, VA : Driver killed in fiery single-vehicle crash west of Franklin Turnpike on Monday afternoon, December 19, 2016

The driver of a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck was killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Hutson Road (Va. 865).

The accident occurred about one and a half miles west of Franklin Turnpike.

Those who lived nearby told authorities at the scene they heard a loud boom and then saw the flames.

The truck, after running off the road, appeared to have bent at the frame between the cab and bed. The rear axle also was partially ripped from the frame on the passenger side. At some point, the gasoline tank ruptured and flames from the fire appeared to have shot as high as 30 feet into the air.

It did not appear that the truck overturned.

Members of the Mount Hermon, Dry Fork and Tunstall volunteer fire departments responded to the scene and worked to quickly extinguish the flames.

The driver’s identity was not disclosed. The victim’s body will be sent to the Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke and the next of kin notified.

While skid marks and ruts along the roadway were visible, it was not immediately known if speed was a factor in the accident.

The Virginia State Police was on the scene investigating.
