Sacramento, CA : Man hit and killed by a big rig on Interstate 5 in Sacramento County early Wednesday morning, May 4, 2016

A man was hit and killed by a big rig on Interstate 5 early Wednesday morning in southern Sacramento County after he walked down the freeway from an earlier crash involving his vehicle.

The unidentified 65-year-old man from Sloughhouse had been in a crash with a big rig on northbound I-5 south of Hood-Franklin Road around 1:15 a.m. However, instead of remaining at the scene, he started walking northbound on I-5, leaving his vehicle in the roadway.

A California Highway Patrol officer was dispatched and arrived at the scene. The man, who the CHP said may have been confused, had already walked away.

After clearing the vehicle from the highway lane, the officer went in search of the driver, according to the CHP. It was then that the officer was told by dispatchers that a pedestrian had been struck in a traffic lane north of the initial crash.

The man was hit and killed by a northbound Kenworth tractor-trailer, according to a CHP press release.
