WAPATO, WA : A 59-year-old Wapato man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on May, Friday 5th 2017

A 59-year-old Wapato man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer Friday when he attempted to cross U.S. Highway 97.

Kirk D. Stewart was walking south on U.S. 97 about 4 miles north of Wapato about 9:50 p.m. when he attempted to cross the road from the left to the right side, the Washington State Patrol reported.

That’s when he stepped out in front of a southbound 2016 Volvo semi driven by Vyacheslav I. Oliy, 55, of Vancouver, Wash., according to a State Patrol news release. Stewart, who troopers say was crossing illegally, died at the scene.

It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident. No charges are pending.
