Hickory ,NC : 17-year-old David Saine St. Stephens High School student killed after pulling in front of a tractor-trailer on Monday ,June 8th 2015

Counselors were on hand Tuesday at St. Stephens High School after a student was killed in a wreck on Monday.

Troopers say 17-year-old David Saine was killed after pulling in front of a tractor-trailer on Kool Park Road. Officials say Saine was making a left-hand turn and was possibly distracted when he was hit.

Saine was a junior at St. Stephens High School.

Officials have not said what they believe Saine was distracted by during the accident, but say a cell phone was collected as part of the investigation. Troopers say they will be checking the phone to see if it was being used at the time of the accident.

Matthew Baker, 20, was a passenger in the car. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

A close family friend of Baker says he doesn't think texting or any issue with a phone contributed to the accident.

"The two were going to pick up a friend and go lift weights, and this was just a tragic accident," Rodney Waugh told WBTV.

Waugh said Baker told him that he and Saine both saw the tractor-trailer at the last second, and that Saine yelled out "Oh God!" just before impact.

Waugh thinks it was a case of an inexperienced driver just making a mistake. "A bad decision at a bad time."

Investigators are looking into the crash and say no charges have been filed.

A vigil was planned for Saine at St. Stephens High School Tuesday night at 7.
