Los Angeles, CA : One person dead in crash on 110 Freeway in Elysian Park on Tuesday morning July 29th 2014
A driver was killed when his car crashed and caught fire on the northbound Arroyo Seco Parkway (110) Freeway near Elysian Park.
The California Highway Patrol got a call about a burning car on the freeway, north of Academy Road around 6:50 a.m.
Officer Christian Baldonado said the vehicle, possibly a Honda Accord, was on its roof.
The CHP doesn’t know yet what led to the solo crash.
Firefighter Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said the fire had spread to vegetation on the shoulder of the freeway. The area charred was 20 feet by 20 feet, he said.
Firefighters put out both fires in less than 10 minutes, Humphrey said.
They also found the body in the vehicle and called the coroner. Firefighters pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
There was only one occupant in the car, according to Baldonado of the CHP.
“We believe the victim is a male,” he said.
Ed Winter, assistant chief of operations and investigations for the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner, said the body has not been identified.
The crash led to the closure of three lanes at 7:17 a.m.
One lane re-opened about two hours later. All lanes were clear by 10:42 a.m.
