Nashville,TN : Driver charged in connection to deadly crash on I-24 on may, saturday 6th 2017
A man has been charged in connection to a fatal crash that happened on Interstate 24 on Saturday morning.
Earl Ali, 35, of Clarksville, is charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication, vehicular assault and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
The wreck happened just before 1:30 a.m. at mile marker 33.
A Chevrolet Impala struck a guardrail, killing the driver, 47-year-old Lonnie Bumpus, of Cunningham, TN.
The driver’s wife, passenger 40-year-old Kisha Bumpus, sustained minor injuries.
Officers noticed there was another vehicle involved in the collision after discovering there was red paint on the white Impala and saw the vehicle had major damage to the rear.
A witness in a semi truck told officers he was almost hit by a speeding red Dodge Magnum. The description of the car was relayed to surrounding law enforcement agencies.
Officers later learned that a trooper had stopped a red Dodge Magnum traveling at 99 mph on I-24 in Montgomery County.
A Metro officer drove to the scene of the Montgomery County stop and saw that the Magnum had damage and white paint on it.
According to officials, the driver of the Magnum smelled strongly of alcohol.
At this point, police say the investigation shows that the Impala was struck from behind by the Magnum, causing the Impala to hit the guardrail.
Ali is jailed in lieu of $122,000 bond.
