Denton, TX : Three die in single-car crash in Ponder on Sunday night, September 25, 2016

Three people died Sunday night in a SUV rollover crash near East FM2449 and C Wolfe Road just outside of Ponder.
The passengers, 27-year-old Thomas Lupercio and 20-year-old Hannah Davis of Justin, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 20-year-old Kindle Brewer of Justin, was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton and later died about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police and fire authorities.
The medical examiner’s office did not list Lupercio’s city of residence.
Denton police responded to the call about 8:30 p.m. The vehicle, a 2000 Ford Explorer, was traveling west on FM2449 just east of C Wolfe Road when it started passing in a no-passing zone, according to a press release from Denton police.
“When the SUV came back into the westbound lane, the driver lost control and the vehicle slid off the roadway on the north side of the road,” the release said.
The Explorer rolled and hit a tree, crushing the roof and trapping all three people inside. The car turned upright after hitting the tree, and authorities had to cut the roof off, the release said.
Police said it was unclear whether distracted driving or drugs and alcohol played a role in the accident.
None of the victims were students at Texas Woman’s University or the University of North Texas, according to officials.
Denton police spokesman Shane Kizer said the department has recorded 16 fatalities from vehicle crashes this year. Last year, police recorded 13 fatalities, he said.
