Vacaville, CA : One killed in Vacaville fatal vehicle crash on Wednesday evening, July 9, 2014
Investigators said a man was killed Wednesday evening when the car he was driving crossed lanes of traffic and hit a large tree in Vacaville.
Vacaville police said the 38-year-old Vacaville man struck the tree at about 6 p.m. near Mariposa Avenue and Amapola Street.
According to officers, the driver was traveling north on Mariposa Avenue just north of California Drive when he veered his four-door Honda Accord across the southbound lanes of traffic, jumped over the sidewalk and crashed into a section of a wooden fence and a large tree.
Initial reports were that the driver was unconscious and trapped inside.
Emergency crews used specialized equipment to extricate the man, who was taken to the hospital with significant internal injuries, police said.
The driver was pronounced dead a short time later.
Mariposa Avenue between California Drive and Amapola Street was closed for about three and a half hours while investigators looked into the crash.
