A Fort Walton Beach man died Thursday from injuries he suffered when his car struck a truck on U.S. Highway 98 near the Santa Rosa County line.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 76-year-old Ilie Stefan was driving a 2008 Volvo west on U.S. 98 about 2:30 p.m. when a box truck in front of him slowed to make a right turn into Cash’s 98 West Package and Lounge. Stefan did not notice the truck slowing and struck the rear of truck.
Stefan suffered critical injuries and was taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the FHP reported.
The truck’s driver, 48-year-old David Reynolds of DeFuniak Springs, was not hurt.
Reynolds was wearing a seat belt, but it was not known if Stefan was wearing one, the FHP said.
The investigation was continuing later Thursday.
The crash tied up traffic on U.S. 98 for hours. Both westbound lanes were closed for a time, and it was almost 5:30 p.m. before all lanes were reported opened.
