Hillsville, VA : N.C. man dies in logging truck accident on Interstate 77 in Carroll County on Sunday, April 24, 2016
A single vehicle accident on Interstate 77 on April 24 resulted in the death of a Statesville, N.C., man.
The accident occurred at the 18 mile-marker in the northbound median in Carroll County.
According to a Virginia State Police report, a 1995 International tractor-trailer owned by Gregory Trucking of Union Grove, N.C., was hauling a load of lumber when the driver drifted off the left side of the road into the median. The truck continued in the median into a wooded area, where it hit a tree head-on.
The driver, Bruce William Moody, 67, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. According to Trooper Shon Phillips who investigated the accident, Moody was not wearing a seat belt. “We could find no evidence that he was, but it looked like he was not,” Phillips said.
The truck is estimated to be a total loss, Phillips said. The load of lumber was lost during the accident, but it stayed mostly in the median and did not contribute to any lane closures. According to Phillips, the left northbound lane of the interstate was closed for some time due to emergency vehicles.
Phillips said that there was not an apparent contributing factor to the accident and he doesn’t believe that drugs, alcohol or speed played a factor. However, state police are waiting on the medical examiner’s report.
The Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, Carroll County Fire and Rescue and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office assisted Virginia State Police on the scene.
