London, OH : A Jefferson Township man died on Tuesday, June 13, 2017
A Jefferson Township man died Tuesday evening after the ATV he was driving on his property Monday overturned and pinned him beneath it.
Joseph A. Bookhamer, 81, of Olmstead Road, was riding his quad-bike early Monday afternoon while driving around a pond on his property to spray weeds, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. However, uneven ground around a catch-basin caused his vehicle to overturn, which left him pinned.
His wife, Susan G. Warner, found him when she returned from work that day. Bookhamer told her he had been trapped all day.She noticed he had not contacted her around 12:30 p.m. during her lunch break.
To get him free, she used another ATV and a tow rope to remove Bookhamer’s vehicle off of him. Shortly after, he fell unconscious.
She called 911 and EMS personnel arrived and performed CPR, among other procedures, before Jefferson Township Fire Department took him to Doctors West Hospital. From there, he was flown to Grant Medical.
Bookhammer died around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department said it was still investigating the incident. They noted that neither alcohol or speeding are being considered as factors.
