Eugene,OR : Driver injured in fuel tanker crash on McKenzie Highway on June, tuesday 13th 2017
A fuel tanker rollover about a mile east of Leaburg closed the McKenzie Highway near the site most of Tuesday.
State Department of Transportation officials said the westbound lane of the highway — also known as Highway 126 — was reopened about 5:30 p.m.
Oregon State Police Lt. Mark Duncan said Robert Reynolds, 31, of Hines was driving east in a 2007 Kenworth fuel tanker with a trailer about 6:40 a.m. when the big rig drifted off the shoulder near Milepost 21, rolled onto its side and came to a stop against some small trees.
Reynolds suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, Duncan said.
When crews arrived, the tanker and trailer were leaking fuel. Eugene-area hazardous materials crews were working to contain the spill as of 10:30 a.m., and a sign on Interstate 5 southbound warned motorists of the hazard as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Transportation officials said a local detour was set up, but those traveling in the area were advised to take alternate routes or expect delays. The latest on the status of the cleanup is available at tripcheck.com.
State police are investigating the cause of the crash.
