DANVILLE, CA : Heart attack leads to fatal crash on Interstate 680 in Danville on Monday, December, 11th 2017

A man suffered a heart attack, lost control on the freeway and died after a crash Monday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities did not immediately identify him, pending notification of his family, but CHP spokesman Officer Nate Johnson confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the driver was an adult male.

According the CHP, witnesses saw the tan Volkswagen four-door sedan driving erratically moments before it slammed into the center median on northbound Interstate 80 near the El Pintado Road on-ramp. The crash happened around 5:10 p.m.

Am ambulance took the man to Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Johnson said.

The aftermath of the crash, and the investigation blocked two left lanes for a time.

No other information was available immediately.
