Decatur, AL : A 21-year-old Purdue University student was killed in a single-vehicle accident at Interstate 565 On Sunday, July 10th, 2016

A 21-year-old Purdue University student working as an intern at a Decatur company was killed in a single-vehicle accident Sunday morning on Interstate 565, according to Madison police and an Indiana funeral home.

Breanna Sue Lemler, of Bourbon, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 8 a.m. Sunday, Madison police Capt. John Stringer said.

The car Lemler was driving was found in a wooded area on the north side of I-565 west of the Zierdt Road overpass, Stringer said. The car apparently was traveling westbound when it left the road and went down an

embankment, police said.

Stringer said the accident is being investigated when asked if Lemler was wearing a seatbelt.

Lemler was a 2013 graduate of Triton High School and a senior at Purdue University, according to her obituary at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home in Bourbon. Lemler was majoring in agricultural economics-sales and marketing

and was an intern at Bunge Corp. in Decatur, according to her Facebook page.

Lemler’s marketing internship at Bunge began in May and was to end at the end of July, said Sonya Aldridge, who is the commercial manager at Bunge. Aldridge said Lemler had a passion for farming.

“She walked into the office every morning with a smile on her face,” Aldridge said. “She was like a sponge. She was starved for information about how we do things.”

Lemler was heavily involved in community and athletic events in Bourbon, Donna Burroughs, superintendent of the Triton School Corp., said Monday.

“She was a fabulous young lady,” Burroughs said.

Mason McIntyre, athletic director at Triton Junior/Senior High School, said Lemler was on the volleyball, basketball and track teams in school.

“She really excelled in all three,” he said, adding that Lemler holds the school record for the 400-meter run.

Lemler was well-liked by her teammates, McIntyre said.

“She was a good leader,” he said. “She was not afraid of speaking out when it was needed. And she did it with humor.”

Lemler was raised on the family farm in Bourbon, a town of fewer than 2,000 people located about 30 miles south of South Bend, McIntyre said.

“She was a really intelligent young lady with a lot of energy,” McIntyre said. “She lived life to the fullest.”

Lemler was the 2013 Triton High School homecoming queen, 2013 Triton Junior Miss winner and 2014 Miss Blueberry. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Purdue.

Survivors include her parents, one brother and one sister, all of Bourbon.

The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Plymouth Wesleyan Church in Plymouth, Indiana.
