A 29-year-old moped rider died in a hit-and-run crash in Ocean View on Tuesday night, Big Island police said.

The victim was identified as Ling Oniel, of Ocean View.

Police said at 7:15 p.m. Oniel, who was traveling west on Kona Drive, was struck by a sedan – possibly a white Honda Civic -- that was going north on Paradise Parkway. Police said the vehicle didn’t yield the right of way at the intersection of Paradise Parkway and Kona Drive.

The driver then took off prior to police arrival.

Oniel was transported to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Police have launched a negligent homicide investigation and are looking for any tips from anyone who may have witnessed the crash.
