Memphis, TN : Man dies after car crashes, flips into water on Sunday March 6 2016
A man was killed after his car went into the water and I-55 and Third Street.
Police said two vehicles were involved in an accident when one of them flipped over and into a ditch.
The car was completely submerged when a group of good Samaritans ran to help the victim.
One man was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition and later died.
Three passersby pulled the man from the vehicle. Paramedics tried to save him, but the man did not survive.
Police kept the area of I-55 closed down for hours as they worked to determine what happened. Eventually, the car was pulled out.
A passenger in the other vehicle involved in the crash said the man’s car was going extremely fast and it seemed like he was trying to avoid other cars.
Police said the victim’s car struck the other vehicle, swerved and hit the guard rail twice, traveling into the median and over the dirt embankment before falling into a creek that runs under I-55.
Witnesses said a man jumped into the water and fought to get the victim out of the car.
Police identified the man killed as 20-year-old Eric Stephens.
