Memphis , TN : 11 year old boy was hit and killed by SUV and women facing charges on Monday , January 26th 2015

The woman accused of hitting an 11-year-old boy with her SUV, killing him, and injuring one other boy, faced a judge Monday.

Police say 26-year-old Sparkel Hastings was driving erratically on Saturday afternoon, which caused her to lose control on Jones Road near Raleigh Millington Road.

A makeshift memorial consisting of teddy bears and flowers now stands where the boys were hit.

Joshua McDowell was 11 years old. His tragic death is touching people across the Memphis.

"They have my deepest sympathy," Anna Taylor said. "I never lost a child, but I just feel sorry for the family and I give them my condolences."

McDowell and his friend, Darryl Howard, were walking on the sidewalk when police say Hastings lost control of her car and hit them.

Hastings is charged with aggravated assault, reckless vehicular homicide, driving while license was suspended or revoked, and not having insurance. She is due back in court Monday, Feb. 2, 2015. For now, she remains in jail on $350,000 bond.

While Hastings' legal troubles are just beginning, relatives of the two boys say their lives will never be the same.

"She's [McDowell's mother] not doing well at all, because she actually had to go to the scene and see him," McDowell's aunt, Lashonna Manning, said. "She is not doing well at all."

Police say Hastings had a suspended driver's license and did not have any insurance. What exactly caused the crash is still under investigation, but neighbors say Hastings should never have been behind the wheel in the first place.

"She shouldn't be driving if she is not legit," Taylor said. "That's how I feel. If you ain't got your driver's license and insurance, then you shouldn't be under the wheel knowing that you can take someone else's life."
