A high school assistant track coach and a truck driver were killed, and dozens of students were hurt, after a grisly crash on a highway in East Texas, officials said Friday.

The crash unfolded late Thursday near the town of Talco, about 125 miles northeast of Dallas, Fox 4 reported. Mount Pleasant High School athletes were returning from a meet, Texas Dept. of Public Safety Lt. Lonny Haschel said. The 18-wheeler truck veered into oncoming traffic and struck vehicles including a bus carrying the Mount Pleasant High School boys' track team.

"I have never seen something like this before," Superintendent Judd Marshall told KXAS. "It's so sad and devastating."

The boys' team bus toppled over in the initial crash on U.S. 271 before the big rig struck a car driven by an assistant girls' team coach, later identified as 30-year-old Angelica Beard.

The girls' team bus escaped the crash. The truck driver was identified as a 50-year-old man from Missouri.

Paramedics rushed 18 students and 3 other adults to nearby hospitals, Fox 4 added. At least one member of the boys' team reportedly was airlifted.
