Plainfield, IL : Two people died when a motorcycle struck a pedestrian on route 59 near Lockport Street early Tuesday, April 28, 2015

Ilinois Route 59 was closed until mid-morningTuesday in downtown Plainfield morning as police investigated a crash that killed a motorcyclist and a pedestrian.

Sean Fitzpatrick, 27, of Plainfield, was driving a 2007 Yamaha shortly after midnight Tuesday when he apparently lost control and struck the pedestrian, a 52-year-old man from Plainfield, authorities said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene, and Fitzpatrick was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet where he was pronounced dead. Autopsies were scheduled for later today on both men.

Fitzpatrick was traveling north on Route 59 and the pedestrian was crossing Route 59 at Lockport Street, according to Plainfield Police Sgt. Mike Fisher. An official at the scene told reporters the motorcycle was found a couple of blocks from the actual scene of impact.

The initial investigation indicates the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed and that the motorcycle traveled another 730 feet after the initial collision before it came to rest, police said.

The pedestrian lived in the area and was often spotted walking in downtown Plainfield, he said. His name was being withheld pending notification of family.

Fisher said a witness reported seeing a second motorcyclist at the intersection when the crash occurred. Police are looking into whether that person played any role in the incident, Fisher said.

At 7:30 a.m., Fisher anticipated Route 59 would remain closed between Lockport Street and Route 126 for another three to four hours as police reconstructed the accident scene.

Plainfield school officials closed Plainfield Academy, an alternative school located at Lockport Street and Route 59, because of road closures from accident investigation.
