EAGLE LAKE, FL : 1 driver airlifted after crash between tanker and dump truck in Polk on Tuesday, 8th January 2019

One person was airlifted, and northbound U.S. 17 was shut down Tuesday morning after a semi ran a red light and collided with a dump truck at Eagle Avenue.
According to Polk County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Horstman, the PCSO responded to the crash at 10:40 a.m.
Witnesses said a black, 1993 Peterbilt semi-truck pulling a tank trailer was traveling west on Eagle Avenue when it failed to stop at a light that had just turned red at U.S. 17. The semi collided with a 2014 blue dump truck belonging to Trans-Phos of Mulberry traveling north on U.S. 17.
The driver of the semi, 33-year-old Joel Pedroso of Clewiston, was found partially ejected with serious injuries. He was flown to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center as a trauma alert.
The driver of the dump truck, 44-year-old Daniel Lee Kiefer of Lakeland, had minor injuries and also was transported to LRHMC, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The dump truck struck the semi on the left side near the front tire with its front end.
The impact caused the semi to turn 90 degrees to the north and onto the east edge of the roadway and sidewalk. The dump truck rotated 90 degrees clockwise, flipping onto its left side. It came to rest just north of the intersection, blocking the middle and inside lanes. The dump truck was loaded with dirt, which spilled onto the roadway.
The semi’s tank was empty and headed to the Port of Tampa to pick up a load, according to reports.
