Shawnee, OK : Police name woman injured in accident on April, Monday 24th 2017
Shawnee police on Monday released the name of a Shawnee woman who was injured last week when she was run over by her own truck while trying to retrieve her dog.
Shawnee Police Cpl Vivian Lozano identified the woman as Emma Stearns, 84.
A nurse supervisor at OU Medical Center said Stearns remained hospitalized Monday in critical condition.
Stearns was injured last Wednesday evening in an accident at Harrison and Ridgewood Streets.
Lozano said Stearns was driving a Ford pickup eastbound on Ridgewood Street looking for her dog when she noticed it while approaching the Harrison Street stop sign. Lozano said the woman pulled over and got out of the truck, but when she exited, the pickup began to roll forward.
That’s when she attempted to jump back into the vehicle to stop it, Lozano said, but instead she fell and was run over during that time. The pickup rolled into traffic on Harrison Street before stopping.
Many emergency vehicles were on that scene just before 9 p.m. Wednesday and a Medi Flight helicopter landed on the northwest corner of Ridgewood and Harrison, which is across the street from Shawnee Bowl, she said.
Stearns was transported to OU Medical Center with unspecified injuries and remained hospitalized Monday evening.
Comments circulating on Facebook have indicated someone stopped to help the woman while another was able to retrieve her dog.
