Monessen, PA : Export driver in critical condition after Salem collision on Sunday, 11th March 2018

An Export man remained in critical condition Sunday after suffering life-threatening injuries the night before when his sedan collided with a sport utility vehicle in Salem Township, state police said.

Matthew Allen, 38, remained unconscious while being tended by emergency crews at the scene — the intersection of Route 66 and Italy Road, troopers said.

Medics took Allen and the other driver, Robert Allen Kardos, 53, of North Apollo, to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville. Kardos was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Allen lost control just before 7:15 p.m. Saturday while driving south and his Chevy Cobalt strayed onto the west berm, investigators said. When he attempted a correction, the car traveled across both lanes of the highway and struck Kardos' Lexus in the northbound lane.

The highway was closed to traffic for about an hour.
