ALBANY, NY : A bicyclist was killed on Saturday, July 22, 2017
A bicyclist was killed Saturday when he collided with the side of a CDTA bus a block north of the Palace Theater at the intersection of North Pearl and Wilson streets.
The man was killed instantly, police said. His body lay under a sheet for several hours next to his bent mountain bike while an accident reconstruction team photographed the scene.
"He was coming down the hill at a high rate of speed and hit the bus," said Albany police Lt. Michael Barone.
He not wearing a helmet.
Police said the man was 42, but withheld his name until the officers can notify his family of his death.
Emma Forbes, who lives nearby and heard the crash, said the man was her neighbor's boyfriend.
"He was kind and neighborly," Forbes said. "He and his girlfriend had a beautiful relationship. They were always surrounded by family and friends, celebrating and laughing. There was a lot of love there."
The corner was cordoned off with police tape and a small crowd gathered on the stoop. When it came time to move the man's body, police asked parents to send their children inside before they gently placed the body into a black bag and then loaded it into a black minivan.
A witness who declined to give his name said there is a bus stop at the corner, but no one was waiting for the bus or getting off, so the driver didn't stop. There is no stop sign on North Pearl Street, but there is a stop sign on Wilson Street, which is one-way.
The bus driver was given field sobriety tests at the scene before she was released. She could be seen crying as she got into a car.
