Four people were injured Monday afternoon on U.S. Highway 53 in St. Louis County in a crash involving two vehicles pulling trailers, and a riding lawn mower. The Minnesota State Patrol said the incident occurred just before 2 p.m. when a 2006 Ford Expedition driven by John B. Thomatz, 73, of Babbitt and pulling a camper trailer was traveling east on Swan Lake Road. Thomatz failed to yield at Highway 53 to a southbound Ford-150 driven by Kyle P. Ringhofer, 36, of Meadowlands, which was hauling an ATV on a trailer.
In the impact, the ATV was thrown from Ringhofer's trailer, and it struck a Cub Cadet lawn mower that was being driven by John M. Tondryk, 28, of Cloquet, in a nearby rest area.
Ringhofer, Tondryk, Thomatz and a passenger in his vehicle, Rachel A. Thomatz, 76, of Babbitt, all sustained what the State Patrol called non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
Ringhofer was treated and released at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, a spokeswoman said. No further information on the other three individuals was available Monday night.
