Payson,AZ : Fatal motor home wreck and separate vehicle fire on September, Tuesday 5th 2017
In another day of highway mayhem, A Payson man died in a motor home crash south of Payson Tuesday after a Winnebago went off an embankment and flipped.
The fatal crash came just hours after a minivan burst into flames north of Rye, starting a small brush fire.
At around 5:30 p.m., the Winnebago traveling northbound on 87 near milepost 196 went off the roadway and up an embankment in the median. It is unclear why the driver lost control. The Winnebago rolled onto its roof.
Bryan Daniel Hamlett, 54, of Payson, died. A passenger in the RV was injured and taken to Banner Samaritan Hospital.
“It’s not immediately clear who was driving as the case remains under investigation,” said an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson.
Earlier, a vehicle fire closed travel on northbound State Route 87 in a separate incident.
Around 3:45 p.m., two elderly females were injured when their minivan hit a guardrail just outside of Rye on the hill leading into Payson, according to the Department of Public Safety.
The minivan burst into flames, spreading to the grasses and causing a half-acre wildfire.
Two helicopters airlifted the women to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital.
Northbound traffic was blocked for some time as crews worked to get the fire under control.
