Duluth,MN : Duluth woman found safe after crash on October, Friday 20th 2017
The 24-year-old Duluth woman who authorities, family and friends looked for throughout the night following a car crash at 5234 Howard Gnesen Road was found Friday morning after calling her mother from a location along a nearby road.
Chassie Lee was located and returned safely to her family, said the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Friends and family still searching along Howard Gnesen Road left the roadway in a hurry upon hearing the news, shortly after the News Tribune arrived at the scene.
Neighbors on the 5100 block of Howard Gnesen Road had reported a woman later known to be Lee wrapped in a blanket and asking for help shortly after midnight Friday, said the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities began an extensive overnight search for Lee, using air, K-9 and human trackers in their search.
Friends at the scene later in the day included co-workers from St. Luke’s hospital and others who said they arrived as early as 3 a.m., when news began to spread that Lee had been gone since the crash.
A vehicle belonging to Lee was found approximately a half-mile north of the original 911 call, and the vehicle had sustained major damage, the Sheriff’s Office said. The vehicle was gone by daylight, and only tracks and debris remained at the scene. Lee’s cell phone was left in the vehicle with multiple missed calls, the Sheriff’s Office said.
She had been last seen walking south on Howard Gnesen Road.
It was Greg Brown's paved driveway along a heavily wooded but populated section of Howard Gnesen Road that the woman's vehicle crossed before crashing into the woods on the other side of the drive.
"If she came to my door for help, I didn't hear her," he said with his wife nearby. "The first thing I heard was a Sheriff's deputy knocking on my door at 1:30 a.m.”
The St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Hermantown and Duluth police departments assisted with the search.
