TRAVERSE CITY, MI : A 21-year-old Lake City man is dead after a two-vehicle crash on Tuesday, October, 17th 2017
A 21-year-old Lake City man is dead after a two-vehicle crash involving a road commission dump truck.
The crash happened Tuesday at 12:50 p.m., according to a Michigan State Police release. The Lake City man was driving on M-72 when he struck the rear end of a Kalkaska County Road Commission dump truck, which was stopped and signaling for a left turn, according to the MSP statement.
The crash occurred in Kalkaska County's Bear Lake Township near Wish Bone Road.
Responding paramedics pronounced the Lake City man dead at the scene, according to the release. Responders also treated the dump-truck driver for minor injuries, and took the dump-truck driver to Munson Medical Center to be evaluated.
Police are still investigating the cause of the collision and are withholding the deceased driver's name until the family is notified, the release states.
Kalkaska road commission Manager John Rogers said the commission has a procedure it follows after such incidents. Road commission foremen were at the scene of the crash to speak to the driver and take photographs.
Rogers said he was away from his office Wednesday and couldn't elaborate further on the procedure.
The driver is OK, but Rogers couldn't say whether the driver will return to the road.
Road commission vehicles are occasionally involved in crashes, Rogers said.
"Our trucks are on the road every day exposed to this type of thing, so incidents happen," he said.
The MSP Seventh District's Traffic Crash reconstructionist, an Aviation Unit, Kalkaska County sheriff's deputies, Frederic Township Fire and EMS and the Bear Lake Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Kalkaska County Sheriff Patrick Whiteford said he asked the MSP to handle the investigation. He did so to avoid any potential conflict of interest that could be created by one county department investigating an incident involving another.
